Overview
Your mattress collects sweat, dust, skin cells, and odors over time. A regular deep clean keeps it fresh, extends its lifespan, and improves sleep quality. The good news is that cleaning a mattress is simple and requires only basic household products.
What You’ll Need
- Vacuum with upholstery attachment
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- Hydrogen peroxide (optional)
- Mild dish soap
- Spray bottle
- Microfiber cloths
Step 1 — Strip the Bedding
Remove all sheets, blankets, and mattress protectors. Wash bedding in hot water to kill dust mites. If you’re dealing with musty odors in clothing, see our guide on how to remove musty smell from clothes without washing.
Step 2 — Vacuum the Mattress Thoroughly
Use the upholstery attachment to vacuum the entire surface, including seams and edges. This removes dust, hair, and debris.
Step 3 — Spot Clean Stains
Use the right method depending on the stain type:
- Sweat stains: Mix hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a drop of dish soap. Spray lightly and blot.
- Urine stains: Use vinegar followed by baking soda. Let it fizz, then blot dry.
- Blood stains: Use cold water and blot gently. For full instructions, see how to remove blood stains.
Step 4 — Deodorize With Baking Soda
Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the entire mattress. Let it sit for at least 1 hour—longer for deeper odors. Baking soda absorbs moisture and neutralizes smells.
Step 5 — Vacuum Again
Vacuum the baking soda thoroughly. This leaves the mattress fresh and clean.
Step 6 — Air Out the Mattress
If possible, place the mattress near an open window or in sunlight. Fresh air helps eliminate lingering odors and moisture.
Step 7 — Protect the Mattress
Use a waterproof mattress protector to prevent future stains and odors. Wash it regularly to maintain freshness.
How Often to Clean Your Mattress
